How QR Codes simplify day-to-day operations at Holzinger Fisch
With a company history spanning more than 130 years, the family-owned business Holzinger Fischverarbeitungs GmbH, based in Luckenberg in Upper Austria, has long since made a name for itself in the food industry. Over all these years, there have not only been several generational changes—the company is now run by the fifth generation—but also numerous rebuilds, modernizations, and expansions of the company premises.
Today, the company has 90 pond tanks in which the fresh fish are housed, cared for, and supplied until processing. With this number of tanks, it is not always easy to keep an overview and be able to say off the top of your head which fish is in which tank.
QR Codes in food production – more than just a trend
QR codes have long since stopped being just a marketing tool. In the food industry, they are becoming increasingly important as a practical tool for traceability, quality assurance, and operational organization. Especially in a business like Holzinger Fisch, where live goods are moved, sorted, and further processed every day, an incorrect assignment of animal and tank can quickly lead to problems—whether in quality control, documentation for authorities, or simply in day-to-day operations. A digital solution that provides all relevant information with a simple scan replaces time-consuming paper lists and significantly minimizes the potential for errors in ongoing operations.
The diverse fields of application of digital solutions
After the successful go-live of the new company website in the spring of this year, syreta was now also able to help the fish experts with this issue by integrating QR codes.
From now on, every incoming fish delivery can be assigned a QR code. This code is then linked to one of the 90 tanks in which the fish are housed until further processing. In addition, all relevant data about the animals can also be stored in the code.
This way, later on, with a scan you not only learn everything about the fish species, but also have all important information about the origin and delivery of the aquatic inhabitants immediately in view.
We not only find the QR codes useful, but embedded in the idyllic Holzinger Fisch grounds, they also look really stylish, don’t they?
Traceability as a hallmark of quality
In the food industry, seamless documentation of origin and husbandry is not optional, but a legal requirement—and at the same time a promise of quality to the end customer. The QR code system that syreta implemented for Holzinger Fisch delivers exactly that: each delivery is recorded, assigned to a tank, and all relevant information on fish species, origin, and delivery date can be retrieved with a single scan.
This is a great example of how digitization works even beyond webshops and e-commerce—directly in operational business, where work is done every day. Simple, practical, and with real benefits for everyone involved: from the employee at the tank to quality control.
Nanu, what kind of fish are you then?
